The Great Recession is an expression being used by many to describe the economic and market conditions
of recent years. Prominent in this turmoil has been the category of financial instruments typically
associated with real estate acquisition and development, including mortgage investment
corporations, real estate investment trusts, limited partnerships, and more. Importantly,
regulators have responded to these issues with the recent introduction of the most significant changes
in a generation.  “Real Estate Investing Through Financial Instruments: Opportunities, Dangers, and
New Regulations” will provide members of REIC with an introduction to these important changes
Students will learn about the Canadian capital markets and the developing regulatory environment
relative to real estate investing. Students will be introduced to the various categories of investment
securities used to purchase, develop and hold real estate by Canadian investors, as well as associated
risks and rewards. Importantly, students will learn about the dangers and opportunities for real estate
professionals in participating in this sector.
