The Great Recession is an expression being used by many to describe the economic and market conditions of recent years. Prominent in this turmoil has been the category of financial instruments typically associated with real estate acquisition and development, including mortgage investment corporations, real estate investment trusts, limited partnerships, and more. Importantly, regulators have responded to these issues with the recent introduction of the most significant changes in a generation. “Real Estate Investing Through Financial Instruments: Opportunities, Dangers, and New Regulations” will provide members of REIC with an introduction to these important changes Students will learn about the Canadian capital markets and the developing regulatory environment relative to real estate investing. Students will be introduced to the various categories of investment securities used to purchase, develop and hold real estate by Canadian investors, as well as associated risks and rewards. Importantly, students will learn about the dangers and opportunities for real estate professionals in participating in this sector.
